It seems that in every store we visit there are various fittings/hoses/clamps of different shapes/sizes and NONE of them fit together in the same store - half the stuff is bought in one place, half in another and another half in the third place. In case You, my dear reader, are counting, that leaves us with 50% leftover parts that end up confusing us as much as this post is confusing You. In spite of this we did manage to get the gray water system up and it's pretty much ready to be glued together and become permanent. How does it look? Makes any sense?

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aQ0QDc0AiM8/T1hXrCaTBRI/AAAAAAAAAJY/__zncBS-DgY/s1600/Gray_Plumbing_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We found it on the internet, but after some price checking found out it would be logical to pick one up from the warehouse here rather than having one shipped since I needed to make a trip down here anyhow. Here's the vessel that will cool our film (I doubt it will ever see as much food as depicted here unless we have special guests...):

Also at the same place was found an efficient water pump which will supply the water to the darkroom and sometimes to four other locations withing The Photo Palace - Shureflo 3.0GPM. These are pretty nifty - very quiet and energy efficient:

Last, but not least (though probably most unsightly) we purchased a perfect black water tank the picture of which I will spare you from seeing. Let's just say we are going to have plenty if refuse space, so no worries there.

After that shopping spree I decided to be brave and waltz into a random but classy RV sales place and ask them a few straight questions about various things that are done routinely on RVs, but of which neither Ryan nor I know of as we are not experienced in this field. Needless to say I was a bit nervous as car salesman are not the kindest bunch and I was envisioning a lukewarm response from guys who deal in $100K+ vehicles to someone like myself, who is not even in the market for one of their trade-ins. Off course I picked out a very large dealership off I-52, one with all the Airstreams and other shiny huge buses displayed in a big lot...
I was wonderfully surprised though when the first sales guy I made eye contact with upon walking in the front door raised his hands in greeting and proclaimed: "Anton! Good to see you buddy!" Turns out of all the RV places in the entire San Diego area I chose to walk into the one where Andres (a friend of mine from years back) has been working for the past year and a half. I actually remember him telling me got that job, but I did not know that it was that particular huge lot.
Needless to say I had a wonderful experience poking around various RVs, asking all sorts of weird random questions to which I am sure nobody else would care to give me answers to, and getting all kinds of information on where to get custom and non-custom parts. To top it off Andres promised to help me select and order the parts through his dealership so we might (or might not) get some sort of a small discount, which will help. Next big purchases are batteries and a water heater and that's coming right up.

Tomorrow night - back to the Bay Area and back to working on the Bus. Next week - dry fit on gray water and fresh water plumbing!

Namaste,
Anton.

Meeting with Renecca Feind

Today I met with one of our wonderful supporters - Rebecca Feind. Design and Philosophy at SJSU and is a very active in the Bay Area art scene in the supporting and guidance role. We discussed possibilities of The Photo Palace Bus becoming a non-profit organization vs. an LLC that is a fiscal affiliate of another established non-profit. There is a lot to learn about it and tomorrow I am planing a trip to the Foundation Center in San Francisco to dive deeper into the mystery of legal world. Rebecca was kind enough to offer us assistance to writing proposals and contacting possible donors - we are eternally grateful for that!

Here is how our baby looks now - we installed the last wall of the bathroom (it was beaten into perfect position with a 2x4 and is now wedged so tightly under the ceiling that I don't think we even needed to put any ties into the adjacent studs, but we did anyhow to make the whole thing as strong as possible. Now if anyone bumps into that free-standing corner they may be quite surprised by how sturdy it is. The rest of the linoleum is out on the drivers side and now the floor is clear to begin construction of the counter. Also the supports for the shelving above the print file bench are up and ready for shelf installation.

To be continued.

Anton

2-22-12 Structures are beginning to be defined a bit

I think after this we are going to be well-suited to be carpenters...

Below are the humble beginnings of the bench seat, print file and the short and long bathroom walls (with our precious utilities in their future places). 8x8 image of the rear of the bus on the day we met:

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZuxTB6J4Bgg/TzwAfnb368I/AAAAAAAAAHA/INHtoSA8JsQ/s1600/photo%286%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; I decided to go all out for these and print them with Lith developer, which gives a brown tone to the image and makes it look more vintage. Old Oriental Seagull paper was used to make these prints - I found it appropriate as the paper was manufactured in Japan. The rough surface texture is very much reminiscent of Agfa 118 surface:

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Ea3vX9zGYc/TzwBNa0PckI/AAAAAAAAAHI/UqHkY-TOLyc/s1600/photo-9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The full article can be found here:
http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2145203/kodak-phases-digital-businesses-film-alive

The news was literally music to my ears. Today, in honor of that announcement, a local radio station played the song 'Kodachrome' by Paul Simon, which is an unofficial anthem of The Photo Palace Bus.

In the past few months uncertainty over Kodaks future was having a chilling effect in the world of film photographers. Many of my fellow photographers worried that their favorite films would go out of production as so many products have before. Multiple new companies emerged in recent years and have have picked up film and paper production in small batches, but Kodak is one of the oldest photographic companies and for a lot of photographers it has reached a symbolic status. It would have been a shame to see a century-old company like Kodak come to their demise and it would have certainly made it harder on The Photo Palace Bus and our mission of keeping Film Photography alive and thriving.

Legendary films such as Technical Pan, Verichrome Pan and Kodachrome were still in production when I started upon my personal journey with photographic art medium. Since then I have been lucky enough to print on such Kodak papers as Azo, Velox, Bromesko and others. I am sad to report that all these products are far better in quality than anything comparable on the market today and they ALL have been discontinued though the decades. We hope Kodak may consider bringing back production of at least a few of the hundreds of their gems of the past.

On a lighter note The Photo Palace Bus will have an opportunity to develop Tri-X with HC-110 - that is great news. Kodak Dektol is a great developer for paper, but it does tend to give some papers a green tinge... What to do? The solution is simple - Kodak Selenium toner, diluted to various degrees, will not only balance out the green, but also add longevity to your silver print. The best of the darkroom technique books often mention specific Kodak products and it is reassuring that at least those that have not been axed already will remain in production.

It is also exciting to see what Kodak may come up with in terms of new black and white films (or... may we dare... papers). Will they have an answer to Neopan Across 100 - a great, rich, relatively new film with very fine grain for its speed developed by Fuji? We hope so.

It is good to know that The Photo Palace Bus and all film enthusiasts across the world will be able to enjoy the trusted quality of Kodak brand for years to come. Today I had Verichrome Pan loaded in my Rolleiflex 3.5F. Here is an image captured on Telerollei with Verichrome Pan on Alcatraz Island. That films tonal response and the ability to hold detail are hard to match.

Anton Orlov

Construction Update

Anton came with one of our supporters Greg McMahon (who took the picture of us) to bring up the flat-file as well as put in the newly arrived water tanks. The flat-file will hold photographs / art pieces / supplies for shows, lectures and classes.

Plumbing is an important staple for any darkroom and a mobile darkroom is no exception. The tanks were ordered custom to fit in our cargo bay below the floor.

The larger tank is for fresh water which will serve the darkroom print washer, chemical dilutions, and the kitchen/bathroom utilities. With it The Photo Palace would have been assured of a quicker and less painful building process. There is nothing however that will stand in the way of this wonderful dream from becoming a reality so I will push on and throw all of my efforts toward seeing it through.

In the wake of the recent news on the funding campaign I can not and will not lose sight of the plethora of positive developments that were enabled by that campaign.
• We are lucky enough to have met many amazing people from so many parts of the world. Some of them are continually working with us now on promoting The Photo Palace and we are eternally grateful for that and hope to build many wonderful working relationships in the upcoming years.
• The publicity gained by the news of our project being featured on as many blogs and community pages as we got is going help us tremendously in the long-run. This is a great first step - now, by the time we will be on the road, we will have a network of photo communities around the globe watching us and maybe even waiting for our arrival. I hope we can be on the road by the end of this Mayan Calendar Long Count.
• All the pledges that we did receive show us that there is already an audience tho believes in us and wants to see this happen - I promise I will not fail them!

In a week or so I am moving to Northern California to join Ryan and The Bus and begin the full scale conversion process. I look forward to the adventure and hope to see many more followers on thhs blog.

For now though :)...

PayPal Saves the Day

Why not take a look at the new 'Support The Vision' tab on the right side of the page?

There you will find a simple PayPal donation button and the funds donated through there will go directly and immediately towards purchases of things like batteries, heaters, wood and many more things we'll need to get this bus in shape.

For your generosity you will be rewarded with the same gifts as we were offering in the kickstarter campaign! (but only for a week on those terms as there are limited edition prints offered there that I still have to make and I have to leave my beautiful Rollov Film Center darkroom behind in San Diego when I move up - after a week we'll have a different reward section added to that page).

If you feel like donating out of the goodness of your heart and don't want a reward simply let us know and all that will happen is an increase in your positive karma. If you would like a reward (and I totally understand and look forward to sending out some prints across the globe) - when you donate please include a message stating which reward you would like and make sure the address is correct on your PayPal account.

Thank You All,
Anton Orlov

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thephotopalace.blogspot.com/2012/02/feb-1st-2012-first-day-of-rest-of-our.html' title='Feb 1st 2012 - First day of the rest of our lives! I have been hooked ever since and now I would like to bring that experience to as many people as I can in order to not let the art and craft of the darkroom go extinct.

What is a gelatin silver (GS) print? - It is a chemical print achieved by exposing molecules of silver salts suspended in gelatin on the surface of paper to light and then developing out the image. At one point Kodak company alone was putting out over 100 various gelatin silver papers to satisfy every taste on the planet. And at that time there were also Afa, Du Pont, Oriental, Luminos, GAF, Ilford... By now, we would be lucky to find 50 various papers from all the manufacturers left today. Fewer and fewer people can tell a well-printed darkroom print from a cheap grocery store photo lab print.

What are the differences between a GS and a digital print? - The main difference in my eyes is that every gelatin silver print was created and inspected by the artist vs. a digital print may have never seen the artist who took the picture and may have been printed not to that artist's standards. Then there is the actual visual difference - a gelatin silver print has an infinite amount of gray scale while a digital print does not. Also in GS prints the light travels through the surface of the print, reflecting back at the viewer through the darker areas, while in an ink-jet print the light is stopped and swallowed up by the pigment, resulting in a much duller look. Finally - a well processed GS print is guaranteed to last at least 150 years without fading, crackling or glazing - how many digital prints can claim that with any degree of certainty?

What is my favorite part of working in the darkroom? - I love it all, I must admit. From the anticipation of waiting for the latent image on my film to be developed, to making all the final and minute adjustments to see the final print come to the state that I envisioned, to spotting the print and making it look flawless. I think the activity that I continually get artistic satisfaction from is that moment when I carry out the final print into the light for the first time - the paper is still wet and gleaming, the print is fresh and has only existed for minutes and the satisfaction of seeing the tones fall into place overwhelms me every time.

Why encourage others to work in the darkroom? - I think there is a sense of dignity and dedication that comes with the darkroom experience. Time gets transformed and outside world fades when one is really involved in making that final print and the experience reaches the realm of Art Meditation. After printing, an artists can safely say that they are fully responsible for what is pictured on the sheet of paper and they feel more connected with the image because of the time invested in their creation.

The print below was made on the last of Luminos Tapestry X fiber paper that I found in a local photo store. Luminos put out some of the best papers for over half a century before folding under the weight of digital tide in early 2000s. I occupied my time working as a photographer/videographer/GD for Carvin - a small local company which apparently makes some really quality sound gear from guitars and basses to amps and mixer - check them out http://carvin.com - chances are you'll be looking at my pictures on any page you see. I started working there in Jan 2010 and it was the most sane and clean environment that I have worked in for a prolonged time up to this point. I has a huge studio with all the lights I could need.
Also, in the beginning of he year I acquired a space that was built into a nice 6-station darkroom with a spacious light work room as well. I spent about a month cleaning and getting it into shape and then re-opened it to the public as Roolv Film Center - a rental darkroom and film educational space. I had about a dozen students come through whom I taught how to develop and print black and white images the old-school way. I also offered custom black and white printing and film development. That experience reinforced my passion for teaching and with the coming to fruition of my long-time dream of a mobile darkroom I now must sadly put RFC on hold for a while and address a bigger audience who are yearning for traditional photographic knowledge.

For The Photo palace this was a definitive year. The year which saw the material manifestation of a beautiful dream. After over a decade in hibernation the irreversible step was taken in August with the purchase of the beautiful 1978 Gillis Bus. The Rubicon was crossed and for the remainder of the year careful planning and preliminary research has taken place.

Now that the year is drawing to a close the final bridges are being burned and dawn of the new era can be spotted above the horizon of the upcoming 2012. I look forward toward the light and though I know not of what it will bring, I welcome it with open arms.

 Let there be Joy!

Anton

Inerior vision

Here is an approximate vision for the front room of The Photo Palace - a nice space for workshops and demonstrations. A sink will be hidden under the lid in the table surface in which film can be developed in daylight. When the lid is closed the table is complete like in the image above and it's a nice 10x2ft surface for all the contact printing frames, mat cutter, art on display, macbook pro (you better believe we'll have one of those on board - how else how will we be able to edit the scans of our most recently developed images to keep you all up to date and to send them out to our future models?) and whatever else art-related material that may end up on that sooth wood surface.

We are very thankful to all those who so far have pledged their support to thi project on kickstarter.com - every bit helps, and big bits help A LOT.

This post is open for comments - what do you think if the cushions on the left? In the past two years I took over 10,000 images, shot dozens of videos, multiple full page ads and catalog covers and much more. I learned a lot, but above all I learned that my true calling is Art creation and education for without Art it would be a truly sad place to live and without education on that subject the appreciation dwindles and Art becomes subject to commercialization and butchery. Hence I look forward to the future aboard The Photo Palace.

Onward Artist Soldiers!

Anton.

•Update 1. I feel that if news changes in less than 24 hours it can be reported under the same post, right? So Carvin asked me to stay through the holidays and up to NAMM, which is what I wanted as I need to save all I can so The Photo Palace can be as welcoming and wonderful as I envision it. It was taught in a large auditorium and had 90+ students. In that class I met people and was exposed to ideas that would shape my path in life and steer me onto the path of becoming an artist.

I became friends with Melinda and introduced her to another one of my school chums - Ryan. They quickly hit it off and we all spent a lot of time together. Little did I know that one week before the finals I would find myself in a Greyhound bus, on a ticket bought for me by my new friends, headed to Northern California for a summer adventure of a lifetime. Among other wonderful stories that are still fresh in my memory is the moment that I envisioned The Photo Palace and I shall regale You, me dear reader, with it now.

That summer was my first time attending an annual celebration of spirit called The National Rainbow Gathering. These have been held since 1972 in various states and across the globe and that year it was in north-central Oregon. There I camped in the area known as Bus Village - a large woody meadow with large vehicles strewn about. Among them was a bus which housed a glass-working space operated by an artist named Bear (or is it Bare.... I didn't ask for the spelling). The back of it had a kiln and a work-bench, major vents and some more equipment known only to the torch-workers. The front part was a living room space with all dark wood finish, which made it feel more like a log cabin than a vehicle. To solve the bedroom dilemma a cut-off VW microbus was fitted on top and along the perimeter under the windows, in small planters, grew various tomatoes, chives and other greens.

The thought of a traveling darkroom was firmly planted in my head. By 19 I have been involved with photography for 7 years and the thought of being an artist had been floating around in the back of my mind for quite some time. Now I could see it - a traveling darkroom in a BUS! A working space that is also livable and mobile. How much better can it get? Unfortunately at that time I was flat broke and the idea had to be put on the back burner.

When I came back from my travels I switched my major, got a degree from Palomar and went on to study photography at San Jose State University. During my studies I learned about such amazing photographers as Prokudin-Gorsky, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and Weegee. All of them made stunning photographs while constantly on the move. Moreover, a lot of photographer had not only a studio component to their traveling rig, but along with it a fully functional darkroom. The idea of the bus was eating deeper and deeper into my brain and was at the same time becoming more defined. The necessity of the addition of a studio space became clear.

All along one nagging thought kept buzzing around like a tired fly on a hot summer day - what am I, an artist who can barely change the brakes on a Toyota Camry, am going to do with a 22.000 pound monster like a school bus? That fear kept me from plunging into this project with full force. For 10 a number of years I kept collecting equipment with a mantra or "I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it...". By the time I met Ryan in the summer of 2007 all was in place and the tension was reaching crescendo, but that part of the story is best left for another short story of it's own.

Anton Orlov

ॐ

My First Post - The day I met my destiny.

Hello world,

This is my first post. It is filled with real Polaroid photographs from the day when I met my new destiny.

For 33 years I have been a school bus - driving kids back and forth to and from school with an occasional field trip here and there. I was loved very much and maintained for a number of years for use only during parades and other special events. When I had to be discharged from my original district there was a party held in my honor and to say goodbye to me some teachers came out of retirement.

On a sunny July day in 2011 I met my new owners - Anton Orlov and Ryan Kalem. They are die-hard photographic artists and are now building me up to be The Photo Palace! I will feature a darkroom with two enlargers and a fold-out north light studio. I will travel the country and host demonstrations and workshops on the art of traditional photography, participate in art events all over the country and hold free portraiture sessions everywhere I go. This is very exciting and I can't wait to hit the road.

Currently I reside in the mountains above Santa Cruz.
